Course Reserves Policy

General Policy

Reserve lists that lack any required information will not be processed until the missing information is obtained. Processing will be expedited if the following guidelines are adhered to completely. These guidelines apply to electronic as well as print and non-print course reserves.

Please be aware that all course reserves are subject to copyright policy and may be refuse if they violate copyright.

  • Submit reserve lists on the faculty reserve form, using more than one sheet if necessary.
  • Materials placed on reserve should be required or high demand readings for specific courses.
  • Items from other libraries can not be placed on Reserve here.
  • There is a 25 title limit per course due to space limitations. Acceptance of a larger number of titles are made at the discretion of the Access Services staff. (Please consider using the electronic reserves option.)
  • Gather the library items and bring them to the reserve desk when you submit the list for processing.
  • When placing photocopied material on reserve, it is your responsibility to do the photocopying. Please be sure to abide by the Copyright laws.
  • We reserve the right to limit the number of copies per title to be processed. We suggest that 1-2 copies per title are usually sufficient to meet all needs.
  • Select a reserve loan period to best meet the needs of the students. Only 1 loan period per item is allowed.
  • A valid university ID is required of everyone seeking to use reserve materials.
  • Reserve lists will be removed at the end of the semester, unless Access Services is notified to do otherwise. Courses taught every semester can be placed on continuous/indefinite reserve.
    • Library items will be returned to the stacks
    • Items owned by the faculty will be returned to their office (or other address as provided)

Electronic Reserves

Electronic reserves are computer files that professors have made available for students to read or print through the HELIN catalog. Materials may be found by searching under the professor’s name or the course name. A patron may select any item that indicates an electronic copy is available, and then choose “Click on the following to” on the subsequent screen. The catalog will prompt for a name and library barcode number (found on the back of the patron’s library card). Patrons may access electronic reserves from within the library or remotely. Electronic reserves items are in PDF format, requiring Adobe Acrobat Reader software to view or print. To place materials on electronic reserve, faculty members should bring good quality, single-sided 8.5 x 11” photocopies of the material to the circulation desk and fill out the reserves form available there. Faculty should allow 48 hours for materials to be placed on electronic reserves.
