Services for Faculty: Guidelines for Effective Library Assignments

Course-related library assignments can provide students with positive and effective research experiences.  To ensure the success of library research assignments, faculty are encouraged to consider the following guidelines.

  • Check that all resources listed in your assignment are available at the RWU Library.  You can check HELIN's Online Catalog  from your office or home for call numbers and locations.
  • Verify that answers to specific questions are readily available in the Library's collections.
  • If your entire class will be using 1 or 2 titles, place them on Reserve.
  • Inform the librarians at the reference desk or send them a copy of the assignment. (x3375 or libref@rwu.edu)
  • Refer your students to the reference librarians for assistance.  Individual research consultations may also be scheduled.

Bibliographic Guides:

  • If your assignment involves extended research, request a print or web-based research guide listing specific sources or types of sources.  To request a research guide, contact your library liaison.  Please allow at least 2 weeks for us to prepare a guide for you.
  • Encourage students to use the subject/course research guides available from the library home page.

Course-Related or Integrated Library Instruction:

  • Request a library instruction session for your class to introduce students to the resources available in the library as well as to specific sources for your assignment. Please contact Barbara Kenney to request a library instruction class.
