Col. Brendan P. Doherty, a 24-year veteran of the state police and amateur heavyweight boxer, became superintendent in April 2007 after serving as director of public safety at Roger Williams University. He was second-in-command four years ago when The Station nightclub fire occurred in West Warwick, R.I. Col. Doherty's humanity and leadership during that tragedy confirmed his value to many public service professionals, and to the families affected by the fire.

Currently overseeing completion and dedication of the R.I. World War II Memorial, Lt. Gen. Reginald Centracchio served for 48 years in the Rhode Island National Guard, including 10 years as the state adjutant general. In July 1996, he was appointed director of the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency, merging the National Guard and the Emergency Management Agency. He is the first member of the Rhode Island National Guard to rise through the ranks from private to major general, the rank he held at his retirement in 2005. General Centracchio grew up in West Warwick, R.I., and graduated from Roger Williams University in 1986 with a degree in public administration.

Currently completing his memoir, Witold Rybczynski is a Canadian architect, professor, writer, and the son of a Polish serviceman. Mr. Rybczynski has written more than 200 articles and papers on the subject of housing, architecture, and technology, many of which are aimed at a non-technical readership and have earned considerable popularity and respect. He writes many of these articles as architecture critic for Slate, an English-language online news and culture magazine. Mr. Rybczynski currently lives in Philadelphia and is the Martin & Margy Meyerson Professor of Urbanism at the University of Pennsylvania.

As executive director of Homelands Productions and executive producer of the Working Project, Jonathan Miller, links public needs with corporate funders. He has reported from Asia, Latin America, Africa, Europe, and the United States for NPR, BBC, Voice of America, and written for The New Yorker, LIFE, Christian Science Monitor, and many other publications. He also worked as a correspondent for New York Times TV. Mr. Miller was editorial director of Think Global, the 2005 Public Radio collaboration on globalization, involving more than 300 stations and 30 national shows; and executive producer of Homeland's Worlds of Difference series about cultural change from 2002 to 2005.
